Simple Qualtrics Survey Setup
Let’s say you want to administer a survey to your class using Terracotta, and:
You want all students to take the same survey
You don’t want the items to be scored individually
If that’s the case, then you can use this guide to set up your survey in Terracotta (and if you want to use some of the fancier features, you might be better served by this one: Terracotta Qualtrics Integration Guide).
We’ve provided complete instructions, and this click-though video, below:
Setting up your experiment
Terracotta was created to enable easy and ethical experiments within Canvas; it also makes it possible to integrate Qualtrics surveys into your Canvas course. We’ll bypass some of the experiment-creation features in this guide, but some will be helpful.
Open Terracotta.
Click “Create Your First Experiment” or “New Experiment.”
Give your experiment a title and description (your students will not see these).
Since you will only have one condition, delete one by clicking the trashcan icon.
Participation
Your choice here may be determined by whether you (or your IRB) require students to consent to participate in your survey. If your survey is part of your regular course curriculum, and not part of a study, you will likely choose “Automatically Include All Students.”
Components
In this section, you’ll create your assignment in Terracotta, and Terracotta will create it automatically in Canvas. It will be helpful if you have your Qualtrics survey prepared and open.
Click “Create assignment”
Give the component a name that you’ll want students to see in Canvas, like “Pre-course Survey” or “Tell me about yourself!”
Only check the first box if you want students to be able to take the survey multiple times.
Click “Save & Close” to return to the Components page, where you’ll see your survey listed.
Click “Edit.”
Click “External Integration,” and select “Qualtrics” from the menu.
Go to Qualtrics.
Click “Distributions”
Click “Anonymous Link”
Click “Copy survey link”
Go to Terracotta.
In Box 1, paste the survey link you copied into the “Qualtrics URL” field.
Click “Preview” to be sure your URL works. Your survey should come up in a new browser tab.
In Box 2, click “Copy URL.”
Go to Qualtrics.
Click “Survey,” and scroll to the bottom.
Click the “End of Survey” box.
On the left side of your screen, you’ll see “Messaging.” Click into the “End of survey message” dropdown menu, and select “Redirect to URL.”
Be sure the “Website URL” field is empty (delete anything that’s there) and paste the URL you copied from Terracotta into the field.
Click the second icon down on the left navigation for “Survey Flow.”
Click “Add A New Element Here,” and choose “Embedded Data.”
In the field provided, type “launch_token” (do not add the quotation marks) and then click anywhere in the green box.
Click “Add A New Field,” and type “anonymous_id” (do not add the quotation marks) and click anywhere in the green box.
Click “Move,” and drag the green Embedded Data box to the top of the survey flow.
Click “Apply” in the bottom right corner.
Go back into “Survey” and publish your survey (clicking first in the top right corner, and then in the box that pops up).
Go to Terracotta.
Click “Save & Close.”
Note that components are, by default, unpublished in Canvas. To publish, click “Assignments” within the Canvas navigation, and scroll until you see your survey title.
Publish the survey assignment and add any Canvas settings (open/close/due dates, etc.).
Terracotta assignments are not added to modules by default. You will find them in “Assignments,” and then you can add them to a module.
